Family Center
*What is Parents As Teachers –
Parents As Teachers (PAT) is a home visiting based program focused on the development of children prenatal to kindergarten entry. Highly trained and experienced Family Development Specialists work with families and help parents understand and encourage growth in each stage of their child’s development. Home visits are conducted twice a month and include information on child development and behavior. The Family Development Specialist brings an activity that is a perfect fit for the child’s developmental stage.
Child development is our main focus. The Family Development Specialist works with the families to help the parents better understand, appreciate, and encourage growth in each stage of their child’s development. We focus on all aspects of development including: fine and gross motor, social, emotional, communication, and problem-solving. The child is learning and developing through play.
*Tuesday Playgroups 10:00 am – 11:45 am every Tuesday morning
Group connections are a great way for our families to share information about parenting issues they may be experiencing and child development. Families also form support networks, share experiences, and discover new ideas on parenting. Group connections include family activities, ongoing groups, presentation, and community events. Playgroup is one example of a Group Connection we provide
*Developmental Screenings
One of the great tools we use is our screenings. The screenings we conduct with the children focus on fine and gross motor, communication, problem-solving, and personal-social development. The screenings help parents see each developmental milestone their child is reaching.
*Resource Connections
As a way to help families grow and thrive, we offer assistance with resource connections. Any service or assistance needed by the family can be accessed with help from the center staff. From specialized developmental screenings to help with obtaining a birth certificate, we are here to help. By promoting positive connections with other community resources we can help families succeed in every aspect of their lives.
The Lending Library
A variety of resources are available for both parents and children including books toys, and equipment. Any Cameron County family may stop at the Family Center and select items to borrow for a period of time. Resources can be borrowed for a three-week period free of charge.
